Public transport fares in regional Victoria now capped at $9.20 per day
In a major change to the Victorian public transport system, regional public transport fares are now capped at a $9.20 maximum daily rate (or $4.60 concession).
This daily cap applies to all V/Line train, V/Line coach and regional bus services, regardless of trip distance or whether a myki or paper ticket is used.
The change came into effect on 31 March 2023, bringing the cost of regional travel in line with fares in metropolitan Melbourne.
It means that the cost of using public transport services anywhere in Victoria – including travel between and within metro Melbourne and regional areas – will not exceed $9.20 per day. Previously, regional public transport fares were as high as $46.00 for a one-way V/Line ticket from Swan Hill to Melbourne.
For regular commuters who travel on a myki Pass, regional fares have been capped at Melbourne’s zone 1 and 2 rate. This works out at $46 for 7 consecutive days travel, or $5.52 per day for passes of 28 consecutive days or more.
A $9.20 regional travel cap is a major change to the public transport system. Changes to travel behaviours and patterns, and to demand for services, are expected. The initiative creates welcome equity for public transport users in regional Victoria, will help improve access for those who are financially disadvantaged, and may encourage people to use public transport – and to travel to regional destinations – when they hadn’t previously.
New and existing V/Line and regional bus passengers should direct enquiries or complaints to Public Transport Victoria (PTV) in the first instance. If you’re not satisfied with their response, you can contact us.
